12 sentenced to death over Amarakeerthi’s murder case, sent to Welikada

Twelve individuals, who were sentenced to death over the murder of former Polonnaruwa District Member of Parliament Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security officer in 2022, have been referred to Welikada Prison. The Gampaha High Court Trial-at-Bar pronounced the sentences yesterday (Feb. 11). Out of 41 charged with the case, 12 received the death penalty. In addition, 04 individuals have been handed six-month sentences suspended for 05 years, while the remaining 23 accused were acquitted and released.
