2 lawyers arrested over assaulting cop

Two lawyers have been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a sergeant attached to the Colombo City Traffic Division and engaging in disorderly conduct inside the police station, the Police Media Division stated. The suspects, aged 35 and 41, are residents of Kadawatha and Batepola. According to police, the incident occurred when the individuals were subjected to a breathalyzer test to determine whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol. During the process, both suspects allegedly behaved aggressively, with one using abusive language and claiming they were lawyers attached to the Hulftsdorp court complex. Police further stated that the suspects caused property damage and forcibly grabbed the luminous jacket of the relevant Sergeant, identified as Sergeant (73727) Chinthaka, pushing him away. The jacket was torn during the incident, and the officer fell to the ground along with the suspect. Accordingly, one suspect was arrested on charges of drunk and disorderly conduct and use of criminal force while the other was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Further investigations are underway by the Pettah Police.
