2 remanded over alleged social media harassment of female gym instructor

Chief Magistrate of the Mahara Magistrate’s Court No. 01, Lochani Abeywickrama, has ordered that 02 individuals arrested over the alleged sexual harassment of a married woman through social media be remanded until March 10. The suspects are residents of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha, Colombo 14, and Kopiyawatta in Mahara, Kadawatha. Presenting facts before the court, Police Constable Ratnayake (No. 90071) of the Kiribathgoda Police stated that the complainant is employed as an instructor at a fitness centre. Police informed the court that statements and content circulated via social media had caused the plaintiff severe embarrassment, mental distress, and physical discomfort, in addition to significant disruption to her family life. After considering the facts, the Chief Magistrate ordered that the 02 suspects be remanded until the specified date.
