3 teens arrested over late night sweet theft

Three teenage girls have been arrested over breaking into a canteen at the Vernon Fernando Stadium in Kalutara and stealing sweets. The suspects are said to be aged around 13 – 15 years. According to the police, after going through footage of CCTV cameras in the area under the leadership of the Crime Branch OIC Chief Inspector Dinesh Silva, they had found a stock of sweets including toffees, chocolates, lollipops, chewing gum and peppermints hidden at a children’s home. Initial investigations have revealed that the suspects had initially stolen the keys to the children’s home and that the theft was committed around 1.30am. The front window of the canteen had been broken with a stick and the stolen sweets were taken in polythene bags before being hidden in the children’s home. According to the Kalutara South Police HQ, the value of the stolen items is around Rs. 40,000. The suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court. (Source : Aruna)
