Litro Gas Company has announced that it has commenced the distribution of 300,000 domestic gas cylinders to the market from today (Feb. 23), in a move expected to ease the recent shortage. The company said a ship carrying 3,900 MT of LP gas arrived at the Colombo Port yesterday (Feb. 22), with unloading operations beginning the same day. 02 additional LP gas shipments are also scheduled to arrive in the country on Feb. 25 and Feb. 28. Litro Gas noted that supply had been disrupted recently due to an unexpected surge in market demand. However, the company plans to release around 100,000 gas cylinders daily starting today, which is expected to gradually alleviate the shortage. The company further stated that new orders have already been placed to maintain adequate stock levels, with further shipments expected before the end of February. Meanwhile, Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development – Wasantha Samarasinghe, had also recently said that a larger volume of Litro gas cylinders will be released to the market from March 12 onwards. Over the past few days, consumers in many parts of the island have raised concerns over shortages of both Litro and Laugfs gas cylinders, with long queues reported at a number of retail outlets. Traders had earlier noted that Litro Gas had not provided specific dates regarding upcoming deliveries. Nevertheless, the company reiterated that the release of 300,000 domestic cylinders is expected to systematically ease the current gas shortage.
