Battery energy storage system to be set up within 6 months

Minister of Power and Energy – Kumara Jayakody has stated that Sri Lanka’s first 160 MW / 640 MWh Battery energy storage system is expected to be constructed within the next 06 months. He made this statement in Parliament yesterday (Feb. 17) in response to a question raised by MP – Suranga Rathnayake. The Minister further noted that tenders will soon be called for the construction of an additional 300 MW storage system. He added that the Government is moving forward with renewable energy development alongside the installation of these systems. “We are strengthening the transmission network while taking the initial steps to integrate battery storage systems alongside future solar power plants on selected lands,” Minister Jayakody added.
