Beauty queen arrested over python dance, bailed

The Colombo Chief Magistrate yesterday (March 24) ordered the release of Nethmi Hiranya, a recent Avurudu Kumariya contestant, on a surety of Rs. 500,000. According to wildlife officials, the incident concerns a viral video showing the suspect dancing with a python at the “CJ Rajakeeya Awurudu Kumara and Kumariya 2026” pageant held at the Royal MAS Arena in Colombo 07 on March 20. The pageant was organized by well-known beautician Chandimal Jayasinghe, The suspect had been arrested following an earlier order by Colombo Additional Magistrate D. J. Premaratne, who had directed the Department of Wildlife Conservation to investigate the incident. Officials informed the court that the reptile involved – identified as Python molurus – is a protected species, and that using it in such a manner constitutes an offence under Section 30 (1) (d) of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance. Investigations revealed that the python had been rented from an individual in the Puttalam area on the morning of the event and returned after the performance, with the suspect allegedly paying Rs. 25,000. Wildlife officers further stated that investigations are underway based on the suspect’s statement, and that other individuals connected to the incident will be questioned and arrested if necessary. Meanwhile, the Magistrate ordered the case to be recalled on May 15. Further investigations are underway by the Range Forest Office, Bellanwila.
