Case against Ranil Wickremesinghe to be heard today

The case filed under the Public Property Act against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe over the alleged misuse of state funds during a private visit to the United Kingdom, is scheduled to be taken up before Fort Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara today (Jan. 28) at 2.00 pm. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), acting on the advice of the Attorney General and under the direction of SSP Shani Abeysekara, is set to inform the court of the progress of investigations conducted so far. The probe concerns allegations that the former President caused a financial loss of over Rs. 16.6 million to the state by undertaking a private trip to attend a graduation ceremony at the University of Wolverhampton, UK. CID officers have also conducted a detailed inquiry into the invitation letter submitted by the former President, which he claimed was issued by the university. As part of the investigation, officers travelled to the UK and recorded several statements. A report on these findings is also expected to be submitted to the court today. Previously, on Nov. 19, 2025, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, informed the Fort Magistrate’s Court that investigations would be completed within a month and that indictments would be filed before a higher court. Meanwhile, the court has also named former President’s Secretary – Saman Ekanayake, as an essential witness in the case and imposed an overseas travel ban on him.
