CEB trade unions to stage symbolic strike tomorrow

Due to the failure to receive an adequate response to their demands, trade unions of the Ceylon Electricity Board have decided to launch a symbolic strike tomorrow (26), from 12 noon to 6.00 p.m. A total of 21 CEB trade unions have informed the Minister of Energy of this decision through a letter sent today (25), stating that the action is aimed at safeguarding the rights of all employees. The letter notes that no satisfactory response has so far been received to any of their eight demands. As a result, they say there is no alternative left for the employees and the trade unions representing them other than to resort to trade union action in order to secure these demands. Accordingly, the letter states that the continued delay in addressing these entirely reasonable and just demands has led to the decision to launch this six-hour symbolic strike. The trade unions further emphasise that neither CEB employees nor the trade unions representing them will be responsible for any adverse consequences arising from this strike, and that full responsibility must be borne by the subject Minister and the present Government.
