CIABOC launches inquiry against Speaker over 8 corruption allegations

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has initiated an investigation into complaints filed against the Speaker of the House, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, concerning allegations of corruption and fraud. According to sources, this marks the first time that the CIABOC has launched an inquiry against a sitting Speaker. The complaint was filed recently by suspended Deputy Secretary General of Parliament and Head of Staff – Chaminda Kularatne, and lists 08 allegations against the Speaker, including: Illegally receiving dual fuel allowances. Using official vehicles for personal or unauthorized purposes. Misusing equipment belonging to the Parliamentary Media Unit. Receiving meals from Parliament without paying the applicable fees. Illegally appointing an investigative officer and providing salary and benefits from government funds. Misuse of 02 official residences. Obstructing requests submitted under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. Illegally intervening in the administrative functions of parliamentary staff. Several opposition MPs, including Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP – Dayasiri Jayasekara, recently voiced their concerns regarding the allegations in Parliament. Meanwhile, the investigation report on Chaminda Kularatne has also reportedly been submitted to the CIABOC.
