CID probe over death threats to Sunil Watagala & Ananda Wijepala

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a special investigation into alleged death threats directed at Minister and Deputy Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs – Ananda Wijepala and Sunil Watagala, police said. Addressing a media briefing at the Police Media Division, Police Media Spokesperson – Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) F. U. Wootler stated that the probe was initiated based on intelligence information received from within the Avissawella Police Division. He added that the CID is expected to submit a report to the Police in due course on the progress of the investigation. The disclosure was made in response to a journalist’s question about alleged threats to the Minister and Deputy Minister. According to police, the matter was referred to the CID after an informant provided a tip-off to an intelligence officer. In connection with the incident, the CID has also recorded a statement from a former intelligence officer on Feb. 24. It is further reported that the alleged death threats were also discussed at a meeting of the National Security Council.
