Continuous strike by radiography technologists temporarily suspended

The Government Radiography Technologists’ Association has decided to temporarily suspend the continuous strike that was scheduled to commence tomorrow (28) at all hospitals islandwide. The Association’s President, Chanaka Dharmawickrama, stated that it has been decided to temporarily suspend the planned continuous strike for a period of 48 hours. This decision was taken based on agreements reached during discussions held between representatives of the Association and the Deputy Minister of Health regarding the issues that led to the strike action. The Association had decided to launch the strike in relation to an issue that arose concerning a medical officer who is serving in a covering capacity as the Deputy Director of the Maligawatta Hospital. However, at today’s discussion, the Deputy Minister of Health stated that a decision regarding the Deputy Director of the hospital would be communicated within the next 48 hours. The Deputy Minister also emphasised to the Government Radiography Technologists’ Association that, in his capacity as Deputy Minister of Health, he would assume responsibility for ensuring the safety of the duties and functions of officers currently on duty. The full statement issued by the Government Radiography Technologists’ Association is as follows: It has been decided to temporarily suspend for 48 hours the continuous strike that was scheduled to commence at 8.00 a.m. tomorrow (28) at all hospitals islandwide. The Government Radiography Technologists’ Association held discussions with the Deputy Minister of Health today at 3.30 p.m. regarding the issue related to the strike action. At this discussion, written agreement was provided that a decision would be communicated within 48 hours against the individual serving in a covering capacity as Deputy Director of the Maligawatta Hospital, which gave rise to the issue, and that the Deputy Minister of Health would assume responsibility for ensuring the safety of the duties of officers currently on duty. Considering the inconvenience faced by patients due to the ongoing strike actions within the health system at present, it was decided to temporarily suspend this strike action until 8.00 a.m. on the 30th.
