Digital ID, Super App projects to be launched in 2026

The Government is focusing on launching inclusive digital development and plans are on to introduce revolutionary projects such as a ‘Digital Identity Card’ unique to every citizen and a ‘Super App’ that will enable all Government services to be accessed in one place in 2026, Digital Economy Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne said yesterday. He said initiatives will be carried out to build an efficient and transparent digital economy and improve digital Public Infrastructure, fostering financial inclusion, improving Government service delivery, and accelerating Sustainable Development Goals. He made these comments at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department to inform the public about the significant achievements made by the Ministry of Digital Economy in the past year and the new development projects scheduled to be implemented in 2026. Senior Presidential Advisor on Digital Economy Dr. Hans Wijeyasuriya and Digital Economy Ministry Secretary Waruna Sri Dhanapala also participated. Speaking at the event, Weeraratne explained the many projects successfully launched by the Ministry in 2025. He said that in particular, the introduction of the ‘GovPay’ system for government payments and the provision of online payment of traffic fines countrywide through it is a notable achievement. The Deputy Minister said that as a step towards digitalising the transport sector, a pilot project to allow payment by card for expressways and a pilot project to allow payment by credit and debit cards for buses has been successfully launched. In addition, he said that the launch of the ‘e-BMD’ project, which allows Sri Lankans abroad to obtain their birth, marriage and death certificates online, has resulted in great efficiency in public services. “The Starlink satellite project was introduced to the country, further expanding digital technology, and the first step in digitizing the Supreme Court under the ‘e-Court’ project to modernise the judicial system was completed. Steps have been taken to ensure the security of the country’s digital space through the introduction of a National Cyber Security Headquarters and a new security strategy. Efforts have also been made to connect the farming community with new technology through the introduction of online systems such as ‘farmernet.lk’, targeting the Manning Market and the agricultural sector,”the Deputy Minister revealed. Speaking at the event, Dr.Hans Wijeyasuriya provided a detailed briefing on the ‘Digital Blueprint’ that will determine the future course of Sri Lanka. He highlighted how this strategic plan to move Sri Lanka towards a data-driven economy will integrate innovative technologies into the public and private sectors. Dr. Wijeyesuriya emphasized the importance of providing the necessary infrastructure and expanding investment opportunities to make Sri Lanka a competitive nation, especially in the global digital marketplace. Digital Economy Ministry Secretary Waruna Sri Dhanapala, briefed the media on the administrative decisions implemented by the Ministry and the steps taken to strengthen the legal framework. He explained the new draft bills to be presented to Parliament in the future to streamline the digitization process and the measures taken to remove administrative obstacles that arise in keeping with the technological revolution. The Secretary further stated that his aim is to create a more transparent public service through new policy changes to enhance data exchange and efficiency among government institutions.
