A doctor has been arrested by the Walana Anti-Corruption Strike Force Unit for allegedly operating an illegal abortion clinic behind the Beruwala Police Station. It has been revealed that the suspect had previously served as a medical officer in Beruwala. The raid followed a tip-off received by OIC of the Kalutara Division – SSP K.A. Udaya Kumara that a doctor was running an unlawful abortion facility at the location. The information was then passed to the OIC of the Walana Anti-Corruption Strike Force Unit – Chief Inspector Indika Weerasinghe. Under a plan devised by the OIC, an intelligence officer of the unit, Police Sergeant Jayalal (428), had obtained an appointment from the doctor for an abortion procedure. Acting on a search warrant issued by the Kalutara Magistrate’s Court, a special team from the Walana unit raided the relevant Nursing Home on Perera Mawatha, Beruwala, on Feb. 08. Police said the arrest was made while the doctor was attempting to perform an abortion on a female police constable attached to the Walana Anti-Corruption Strike Force Unit, who had been deployed as a decoy patient. A stock of drugs allegedly used for abortions was also taken into custody during the raid. Investigations have further revealed that the doctor had been charging fees from Rs. 45,000 upwards per person for the procedure. Following the arrest, the doctor’s assistant had reportedly fainted at the premises. Police also stated that the doctor had attempted to bribe the officers, offering to pay any amount to avoid arrest. However, officers proceeded to take him into custody. Meanwhile, it has also been uncovered that the suspect is allegedly linked to the illegal trade of narcotic pills. The raid was carried out under the direct supervision of the IGP and on the instructions of the Director of the Walana Central Anti-Vice Strike Force, SSP Kamal Ariyawansa. The operation was led by Chief Inspector Indika Weerasinghe, with the participation of Police Inspector Janitha, Sub-Inspector Jayaweera, Police Sergeants Jayalal (428) and Madhuranga (61746), Police Constables Danushka (93425), Kesumaran (105086) and Rihari (13090), and Police Constable Driver Udara (16227).
