Drinking water demand rises amidst dry weather

2026-03-16 - 06:28

The prevailing dry weather conditions have led to a significant surge in the demand for drinking water across the country. Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply – Dr. Susil Ranasinghe, says that the highest increase in demand has been recorded in the Colombo District. He cautioned that this surge in demand could disrupt the regular water supply. In response, a Special Management Program has been established to ensure continuous water availability for the public, the Minister noted. Authorities under this program are implementing necessary measures, and the public has been urged to use water prudently. Recently, dry conditions in many parts of the country have already caused water supply interruptions and affected sectors such as agriculture and hydroelectric power generation.
