Final rites of veteran athlete Kosala Sahabandu today

The final rites of former Sri Lankan athlete Kosala Sahabandu will be held today (15) at 3.00 p.m. in Boralesgamuwa. Mr. Sahabandu, who had been battling illness for some time, passed away yesterday (14) at the age of 76. His remains have been placed at a private funeral parlour in Boralesgamuwa for the public to pay their last respects. He was a member of the Sri Lankan team that won the gold medal in the men’s 4×400 metres relay at the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran. He also represented Sri Lanka in the 4×400 metres relay at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games and at the 1982 Asian Games. In 1974, he set a national record in the 800 metres event. He further represented Sri Lanka at the 1979 Asian Athletics Championships held in Tokyo. Kosala Sahabandu is remembered as one of Sri Lanka’s distinguished track and field athletes who brought international recognition to the country through his achievements.
