The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has reportedly summoned their representatives from 370 regional health service offices island-wide to Colombo today (Feb. 11). The move is aimed at deciding on future trade union action. GMOA Secretary Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa told the media that the ongoing TU action, launched demanding the establishment of a distinct medical service for government doctors and solutions to their issues, will continue without interruption. He added that the problems prevailing at regional health service offices will also be discussed at length. Dr. Sugathadasa further clarified that not all doctors from those offices have been called to Colombo, and that only representatives will attend the discussion. Therefore, daily operations of the regional health service offices will not be disrupted, he said. He also noted that the TU measures currently in effect – including refraining from issuing prescriptions to externally purchase medicines unavailable in hospitals, not providing recommendations for laboratory tests that must be obtained externally, and specialists withdrawing from cover duties – will continue. Dr. Sugathadasa emphasised that if the government fails to take prompt action regarding their demands, they will have no alternative but to intensify their TU action.
