The Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) has decided to launch an island-wide indefinite trade union action from 8.00am today (January 26). The decision has been taken owing to the alleged failure by the Ministry of Health to implement agreed solutions. Speaking at a media briefing held yesterday afternoon (Jan. 25), Secretary of the GMOA – Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa announced the decision, adding that it will impact services at government hospitals across the country. Dr. Sugathadasa said as part of the trade union action, the GMOA members will suspend prescribing drugs that need to be purchased from external pharmacies and also order laboratory tests to patients. He said the Central Committee of the GMOA will meet on Wednesday (Jan. 28) to discuss the matter. Dr. Prabath Sugathadasa added that if their demands are not met, they will not hesitate to intensify the trade union action. On Jan. 23, the GMOA also staged a 48-hour token strike based on several demands, which ended yesterday.
