The Department of Meteorology states that the heat index, the temperature felt by the human body, may reach “caution” levels in several parts of the island today (28). Additional Director General Mr Ajith Wijemanna noted that in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Eastern, North Western, Northern and North Central provinces, as well as in the Monaragala District, the heat index could range between 39°C and 45°C, which falls within the “caution” category. In an advisory issued by the Department, the public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimise potential adverse health effects due to the prevailing hot conditions. According to meteorological data, the heat index in many areas currently remains at “caution” levels — between 39°C and 45°C. It is further stated that if temperatures rise to between 46°C and 52°C, conditions would be classified as “extreme caution”, while anything above 52°C would be considered “dangerous”. According to the Department of Meteorology, the highest temperature recorded yesterday (27) was in the Kurunegala District at 37.8°C. Meanwhile, Mr Anil Jasinghe emphasised that the prevailing high temperatures are particularly harmful to young children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses. He further pointed out that prolonged exposure to heat can lead to dehydration, heat-related illnesses, and heatstroke, and urged the public to remain especially cautious. In particular, exposure to direct sunlight between 10.00 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. should be avoided as much as possible. When engaging in outdoor activities, the use of hats and sunglasses is recommended. Additionally, medical advice highlights the importance of wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing, avoiding tight garments, and drinking water frequently to prevent dehydration. He also noted that if symptoms such as dizziness, excessive sweating, or extreme fatigue occur, individuals should immediately move to a cooler place and seek medical advice if the condition persists.
