The admission of students to Grade 01 for the 2026 academic year is taking place today (Jan. 29). The Ministry of Education stated that the newly reformed Grade 01 curriculum is scheduled to be implemented starting this year as part of ongoing education reforms. The national ceremony to mark the admission of Grade 01 students was held this morning at Gunasekara Vidyalaya, Athurugiriya, under the patronage of the Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education – Dr. Harini Amarasuriya. Issuing a congratulatory message to children entering Grade 01, the Prime Minister stated that the government’s objective is to ensure quality education within a prosperous country. She emphasized that it is the responsibility of the government to provide equal and quality educational opportunities to every child, moving away from an era where a child’s future was determined by the economic strength of their parents. Meanwhile, she noted that although the implementation of the new Grade 06 education reforms has been postponed until next year, no student will be allowed to face injustice as a result of the delay.
