Foreign media reports state that Iran has announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and warned that any vessel attempting to pass through will be attacked. According to the reports, the decision was taken following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The move comes amid ongoing retaliatory strikes by Iranian armed forces against United States and Israeli targets. The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is often described as the world’s “energy hub”, with approximately 20% of global oil supplies transiting through the route. However, it is noteworthy that Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, had previously stated in remarks to ‘Al Jazeera’ that there was no intention to close the Strait of Hormuz.
