Japan to support green transformation in the transport sector

2026-03-29 - 02:34

A contract has been signed for a project to donate environmentally friendly, high-capacity, low-floor buses from Japan to Sri Lanka. Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Akio Isomata, stated that this project represents an important milestone in greening Sri Lanka’s transport sector and will also contribute to improving economic efficiency. The signing ceremony was attended by Ambassador Akio Isomata and Secretary to the Ministry of Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, Professor Kapila C. Perera. The Government of Japan will provide approximately Rs. 112 million to implement the project. This initiative stems from discussions held between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and former Japanese Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Akiko Ikuina, during her visit to Sri Lanka in 2025. The large, low-floor buses to be provided comply with Euro 4 emission standards, ensuring they are highly environmentally friendly. The project is expected to advance the greening of the transport sector and directly support the government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” policy initiative. The introduction of these high-standard vehicles will also help address key urban challenges, including reducing traffic congestion and improving economic efficiency. Furthermore, their accessibility features will provide easier access for elderly persons and individuals with disabilities, aligning with the broader concept of human safety and inclusivity.
