A fire that broke out in several shops in the town of Maharagama this morning (8) has caused losses estimated at around Rs. 40 million. This was stated by Kusumsiri Dasanayake, President of the Pamunuwa Aluth Para Dawn Cloth Traders’ Association, speaking at a media briefing. “The fire that broke out in several shops this morning has caused us losses of around Rs. 40 million. The fire did not originate from a clothing store but from a place selling ritual items. However, we would like to express our gratitude to the Sri Lanka Police, the Municipal Council workers, and Member of Parliament Devananda Suraweera for their swift action in helping to bring the fire under control as soon as it broke out. Nevertheless, we assure the public that there will be no shortage of clothing during the festive season.” Meanwhile, residents in the area allege that delays by the fire brigade contributed to the extent of the damage.
