Mahanayake Theros urge President to appoint Gammanpila as Auditor General

The Mahanayake Theros have reportedly written to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, urging that Dharmapala Gammanpila, the most senior and experienced officer currently serving in the Auditor General’s Department, be appointed to the vacant post of Auditor General. In their letter, they state that it would be appropriate to appoint the department’s most senior internal official to the position, emphasizing that selecting an external candidate would not be appropriate. The position of the 41st Auditor General of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka became vacant following the retirement of the previous office holder on April 08, 2025. According to the letter, Gammanpila was appointed to cover duties in an acting capacity from April 09, 2025 – Dec. 05, 2025. The Theros have pointed out that the failure to appoint a permanent Auditor General for nearly 08 months, along with the vacancy that followed the end of the acting period, has led to differing views among various parties regarding the management of public financial oversight.
