Medin Full Moon Poya Day, today

2026-03-02 - 05:19

Today (March 02) marks the Medin Full Moon Poya, a day of historical and religious significance in Buddhism. The Medin Full Moon commemorates the Buddha’s first visit to Kimbulwathpura (Kapilavastu) at the invitation of his father, King Suddhodana, following his enlightenment. The day is also observed to honour parents, reflecting the Buddha’s visit to express gratitude to his father and share the Dhamma. Significant events associated with Medin Poya include the preaching of the Candakinnara Jātaka for Yasodara Devi and the ordination of Prince Rahula and Prince Nanda. Devotees are expected to engage in religious activities, including visiting temples, observing Sil, and participating in Dhamma discussions, to reflect on the teachings of the Buddha and the importance of gratitude and respect for parents.
