Several details uncovered in relation to the lawyer identified as Thamara Kumari Aberathna, who is being detained on suspicion of aiding and abetting the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa, were informed to court today (05) by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). This disclosure was made when the case concerning her was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama. Accordingly, investigating officers informed court that a Honda Vezel motor vehicle valued at approximately Rs. 25 million, which was taken into police custody at the time of her arrest, was registered in the name of another individual but in fact belonged to the suspect lawyer. Although the vehicle was registered in the name of one Wilfred Dissanayake, investigations have revealed, based on statements made by him, that the vehicle had been purchased by the lawyer using her own funds. CID officers further informed court that investigations are being conducted into the source of the funds used by the suspect lawyer to purchase the vehicle, as well as into the financial transactions reflected in her bank accounts. Officials also stated that the suspect lawyer is being detained and questioned under a detention order obtained in terms of the Prevention of Terrorism Act. Further submissions were made by CID officers that investigations have revealed that the suspect lawyer had allegedly assisted the gunman said to have carried out the murder of Ganemulla Sanjeewa by providing two cable ties, a sticker bearing the insignia used on lawyers’ vehicles, copies of the Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure, and photographs required to prepare a lawyer’s identity card.
