Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala says that a new police division will be established to prevent computer-related crimes (cybercrime). The Minister made this statement yesterday (06) while attending the opening ceremony of the Polpitiya Police Station. Addressing the gathering, the Minister spoke about the evolving nature of crime, noting that between 23 and 25 cybercrime-related incidents are reported daily, which he described as a significantly high number. He added that the necessary modern technology, specialised expertise and the modernisation of the Police Department are being implemented in a systematic manner to ensure the effective investigation and resolution of such crimes. The Minister emphasised that it is a key objective of the Government to transform the Sri Lanka Police into a highly professional, efficient and corruption-free institution, and that continuous efforts are being made towards this goal. He further stated that mechanisms have been put in place to create a conducive environment for capable officers to advance in their careers, while also ensuring that officers who engage in misconduct are removed from the police service.
