One in four people in Sri Lanka living in poverty

The Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment states that one in four people in the country is living in poverty. Subject Minister Upali Pannilage noted that around 80 per cent of those affected live in rural areas. The Minister further stated that the causes of poverty in each Grama Niladhari Division should be identified and that representatives of Community Development Councils should work collectively to prepare development plans accordingly.
