The launch of the “Maize Stock” online information system and web application, designed to accurately manage the country’s maize demand and supply, was held yesterday (20) at the Ministry of Agriculture under the patronage of Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Namal Karunaratne. The primary objective of this new system is to maintain accurate data on existing maize stocks in the country and to facilitate scientific decision-making regarding imports. With the implementation of this digital system, a range of significant benefits will be available to all stakeholders in the sector. It will enable farmers to identify market demand for their harvests in advance and to obtain fair prices without the influence of intermediaries. As a clear understanding of the total maize stock and shortages in the country can be obtained, stock collectors will be able to plan their collection and distribution activities without risk. Meanwhile, industrialists, including animal feed manufacturers, will be able to easily identify the locations and quantities of available raw material stocks, allowing them to maintain uninterrupted production processes. In particular, the existence of an accurate data system on domestic production will enable the Government to prevent unnecessary maize imports, conserve foreign exchange, and make policy decisions that protect local farmers.
