The United States Department of Defence is preparing to deploy a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to the Middle East, according to reports. A Marine Expeditionary Unit typically consists of a rapid-response force of about 2,500 personnel from the United States Marine Corps. However, it remains unclear what specific role the unit will be assigned or where exactly it will be deployed in the region. Traditionally, MEUs are used for amphibious operations and can be rapidly mobilised for a range of missions, including large-scale evacuations, raids and military strikes.
