PM reveals current allowances & benefits for MPs

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya today (Feb. 19) disclosed the allowances and benefits provided to the MPs at present. She made this revelation while responding to a question raised by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP – Chaminda Wijesiri. According to the Prime Minister, a sitting MP currently receives the following: Monthly allowance: Rs. 54,285 Entertainment allowance: Rs. 1,000 Driver allowance: Rs. 3,500 per month (not paid if a driver is provided by the Ministry of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs) Telephone allowance: Rs. 50,000 Transport allowance: Rs. 15,000 Office allowance: Rs. 100,000 Rs. 2,500 per day for attending parliamentary sessions Rs. 2,500 per day for committee meetings Rs. 2,500 per day for committee meetings held on non-session days Meanwhile, MPs also receive a fuel allowance based on the distance from their electoral district to Parliament. For national list MPs, this is calculated at 419.76 liters of diesel per month, paid at the approved market rate on the first day of each month, the Prime Minister added.
