Postal charges to rise

The Department of Posts has announced a revision of local postal charges with effect from today (Feb. 09). Accordingly, the minimum postage stamp fee, which previously stood at Rs. 50, has been increased to Rs. 70. However, the registered postage fee remains unchanged at Rs. 60. In addition, the base weight category for ordinary and business letters has been revised from 20g to 30g, while the maximum weight permitted for a single leaflet or a bundle of leaflets has been increased from 100g to 120g. The concessionary rate of Rs. 30 previously charged for letters posted by charities, social service institutions, and voluntary organizations has also been increased to Rs. 50. Meanwhile, the fee charged under the special service provided to ministries and government departments for the registration of postal items has been raised from Rs. 110 to Rs. 130. The price of a postcard has also been increased from Rs. 20 to Rs. 40. The Department further noted that standard parcel tariffs and Sri Lanka Post courier services (speed post/logi post) will remain unchanged. In addition, revisions have been made to the minimum surcharge applicable to postcard charges, the advertising mail service, the Tele-Mail service, stamped envelopes, the postal bag service, as well as unpaid or underpaid postal articles.
