Electricity disruptions have been reported in Colombo 9, Colombo 14, and several areas in Gampaha. The restoration of electricity in the affected areas is expected to take some time due to an ongoing trade union action launched by employees of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). TUs stated that the action began at 3.00 p.m. yesterday (March 09) based on 08 demands, including the failure to issue proper appointment letters when assigning employees to the new institutions established following the restructuring of the CEB. According to the unions, the TU action will continue for 24 hours. Chairman of the CEB Technical Engineers’ Union, Kosala Abeysinghe, said the action would be intensified if solutions are not provided to their demands. However, CEB Transformation Task Force Head Pubudu Niroshan Hedigalla stated that transferring the CEB to newly established companies will not raise any issues regarding employees’ rights and privileges.
