President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held a telephone conversation yesterday (March 18) with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, to discuss escalating tensions in the Middle East and their wider implications. During the call, President Dissanayake inquired about the current situation in Qatar, particularly the well-being of the approximately 150,000 Sri Lankans residing in Qatar. He expressed Sri Lanka’s solidarity and support for the State of Qatar amid ongoing regional developments. His Highness the Emir briefed the President on the prevailing conditions and provided assurances regarding the safety and welfare of all residents, including Sri Lankan nationals. The two leaders also discussed the broader challenges arising from the escalation, including potential disruptions to global supply chains and energy markets, particularly in light of risks to key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz. President Dissanayake emphasised that enhanced international coordination is essential to mitigate the economic impact of rising energy costs, especially on developing countries like Sri Lanka. His Highness the Emir reaffirmed Qatar’s role as a stable and reliable partner in the global energy sector and its commitment to ensuring the continuity of supplies despite current challenges. Both leaders expressed deep concern over the broader implications of the situation for regional and global stability and stressed the urgent need to de-escalate tensions, halt further military escalation, and pursue diplomatic solutions through constructive dialogue. President Dissanayake reiterated Sri Lanka’s support for peaceful engagement as the only viable path toward lasting stability. (President’s Media Division)
