Importers warn that the prices of imported goods and essential food items may increase as shipping charges have risen by about 20 per cent amid the war-like situation in the Middle East. In addition to higher freight charges, marine insurance costs have also increased, while container charges have risen by between US$1,000 and US$2,000. As a result, importers are reportedly reluctant to place orders for essential food items, raising concerns that the continuous supply of such goods could be disrupted. Wholesale traders in Pettah have also expressed the view that imported items such as sugar and lentils could face shortages during the Sinhala and Hindu New Year season. Meanwhile, investigation officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority have also sought information from Pettah wholesale traders regarding existing stocks and the current situation relating to essential food items. The information gathered is to be submitted to the relevant ministry.
