Central Police Headquarters – Kandy has launched an investigation into a suspicious foreign national who allegedly filmed an unauthorized video inside the American Corner located at the D. S. Senanayake Memorial Public Library in Kandy. The American Corner, an information centre affiliated with the Embassy of the United States in Sri Lanka, was reportedly entered by the individual under the pretext of being a journalist. According to reports, the foreign national arrived while an officer from Turkish Village Midigama was on duty and made inquiries about the facility. He then allegedly attempted to record video inside the office using a small device, which prompted the officer to object. According to the relevant officer’s statement, following the objection, the individual reportedly questioned the display image showing an astronaut installing the American flag on the Moon, asking why such “false claims” were being presented. The officer stated that when she objected to being filmed, the individual claimed there were no restrictions on recording her and continued capturing images and video. She then requested the visitor to enter his details in the visitor log maintained for guests, but he allegedly refused and left the premises on a motorcycle. The officer subsequently informed the US Embassy about the incident via email. Meanwhile, investigations conducted using the relevant motorcycle’s number plate revealed that the vehicle had been rented. Further inquiries revealed that the suspect is an Irish national currently staying at a hotel on Kandy Lake Road in Kandy for around 02 weeks. (Source: Aruna)
