Proposal to the Government from the Railway Station Masters’ Association

2026-03-17 - 15:03

The Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Association states that Sri Lanka may face a fuel-restricted situation due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has led to rising global fuel prices, disruptions to supply chains, and potential instability among fuel-supplying countries. Therefore, it emphasises that the railway service must be strengthened. In a statement, the Association said that, with foresight regarding this situation, it had already informed the Department of Railways on the 4th of this month. Accordingly, it points out that if a fuel shortage arises, the use of private vehicles will be limited, and office staff, students, and the general public who travel daily will inevitably shift towards public transport services. Particularly in urban and suburban areas, the increase in daily commuting demand is likely to place significant pressure on the existing public transport systems. Therefore, the Association highlights that it is essential to urgently expand and strengthen railway services to meet transport needs. It has also taken steps to submit a set of proposals to the President to ensure these measures are implemented without delay.
