QR code system mandatory for fuel distribution from today

The Ministry of Energy has announced that the QR code system for fuel distribution has been reintroduced due to disruptions in global fuel supply routes and an unusual rise in local demand amid the ongoing Middle East conflict. According to the ministry, the system came into effect at 6.00 a.m. today (March 15), and motorists must present a valid QR code to obtain fuel at all filling stations across the island. Fuel will not be issued without the QR code under any circumstances. How to download the QR code: 1. Those who have previously registered QR codes: i. If the ownership or phone number of the vehicle has not changed, you can download your QR code from https://fuelpass.gov.lk / from midnight on 2026.03.14. ii. If the ownership or phone number of the vehicle has changed, you must re-register from https://fuelpass.gov.lk / from 6.00 am on 2026.03.15. 2. For vehicles that have not previously registered the QR code and are being registered with the Ministry of Motor Vehicles (RMV): i. You must register on the website https://fuelpass.gov.lk / from 6.00 am on 15.03.2026. Weekly fuel allowance by vehicle category: Buses – 60 Litres Motorcycles – 05 Litres Motor cars – 15 Litres Vans – 40 Litres Motor Lorries – 200 Litres Land Vehicles – 25 Litres Three-Wheelers – 15 Litres Special Purpose Vehicles – 40 Litres Quadricycles – 05 Litres The ministry also noted that fuel for private passenger transport buses will be issued through the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB).
