Request to convert Jaffna Teaching Hospital into a National Hospital

Administrative officials of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital say that there is a requirement for additional staff in order to further enhance and improve the efficiency of all services provided at the hospital, including current treatment services. They made these observations while presenting facts during an institutional review of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital conducted by the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Health, Media and Women’s Empowerment. The committee met in Parliament on the 21st under the chairmanship of Member of Parliament Nihal Abeysinghe. At the meeting, the relevant officials also informed the committee of the need to convert the Jaffna Teaching Hospital into a National Hospital. Speaking at the committee meeting, the Secretary to the Ministry of Health stated that there are currently three National Hospitals in Sri Lanka, and that it is expected to convert the Jaffna Teaching Hospital into a National Hospital in the near future after fulfilling the required criteria. The committee chairman also pointed out the need to conduct a further review of staffing requirements. In addition, the hospital authorities requested the committee to provide the necessary support to appoint an internal auditor to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital in order to ensure transparency in the hospital’s operations, including hospital administration.
