The Supreme Court has directed that notices be issued to former Presidents – Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe, current President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and several other parties, including the Attorney General, over a fundamental rights petition. The order was delivered after considering a petition against programs and circulars implemented by past and present governments that allegedly allow individuals to change their gender identity through medical procedures without a biological basis, claiming such actions are unlawful. Filed by retired and disabled war hero Shanta Jayatilaka, the petition was heard before a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justices Shiran Gooneratne and Achala Wengappuli. The Court instructed the petitioner to ensure that notices are sent to the respondents within a week and scheduled the next hearing for July 20.
