Amid the escalating war-like situation in the Middle East region, several data centres belonging to Amazon, the world’s leading cloud services provider, have reportedly come under drone attack. As a result of these attacks, two data centres in the United Arab Emirates have sustained direct damage, while the centre located in Bahrain has also been affected. Reports indicate that this unexpected incident has disrupted banking operations, websites and numerous mobile applications across the Middle East region. The attacks are said to have caused structural damage to buildings, while data processing operations have been halted due to power system failures. In addition, the company has stated that the activation of fire suppression systems led to water damage to technical equipment. Owing to the prevailing security risks, Amazon has advised all institutions using its services in the Middle East to immediately migrate their data to servers located in safer regions such as Europe or the United States. Digital transaction systems of several leading banks in the Emirates have already been rendered inoperative, significantly affecting day-to-day life. Foreign media further report that this is considered one of the first instances in which the data infrastructure of a major technology company has been subjected to a wartime attack, raising serious concerns regarding digital stability in the region.
