A silent protest was staged yesterday morning (06) opposite the Polonnaruwa Court Complex by an association of victims from the Polonnaruwa area, alleging that the EARN WAY cryptocurrency company had fraudulently swindled more than Rs. 500 million from the public over the past two years. Protesters stated that although ten suspects were expected to be arrested in connection with the fraud, only two suspects have been taken into custody so far. As the two suspects were due to be produced before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate’s Court, the protesters urged that they should not be granted bail. Those who claim to have been defrauded further alleged that the perpetrators had persuaded them to invest by stating that Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe had also invested money in the scheme. They also said that a memorandum regarding the matter had been handed over to the Secretary to the President. It is reported that more than 5,000 people across the island have fallen victim to the alleged scam. Investments ranging from Rs. 1 million to Rs. 10 million had reportedly been made with the EARN WAY cryptocurrency company.
