The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has discovered the country’s largest water source during a tube well drilling operation near the Pitabeddara Police Station. Senior Hydrogeologist – Indrajith Gamage confirmed that the source yields a continuous flow of 10,000 litres per minute (10 cubic meters) – the highest ever recorded in Sri Lanka. Previously, the largest known source in the Madu area produced around 7,000 litres per minute. The tube well was drilled after studying rock layers and locating groundwater flow through fractured rocks using technical tools. The NWSDB has stated that the water will be distributed to Pitabeddara, Morawaka, and surrounding areas, aiming to alleviate water shortages for local communities.
