The Somawathiya Road in the Lankapura Divisional Secretariat Division has been temporarily closed to vehicular traffic after the Mahaweli River overflowed at Manampitiya following heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas. The Assistant Director of Disaster Management in Polonnaruwa stated that the river’s water level has risen beyond the spill point, submerging sections of the Sungawila–Somawathiya Road. Authorities have taken steps to close the route to ensure public safety. He further noted that torrential rains in the upper regions of the island have significantly increased the flow of the Mahaweli River, resulting in the current flooding situation. Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department has issued a warning to residents living along both banks of the Mahaweli River to remain alert and be prepared to follow official instructions if water levels continue to rise. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes until floodwaters recede and normal traffic conditions are restored.
