Special security programme for the festive season

2026-03-29 - 02:54

Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Traffic Control and Road Safety, W. P. J. Senadheera, stated that a special security programme will be launched from 1 April in line with the upcoming festive season. He noted that, given the expected increase in public travel during the New Year period, more traffic and security officers will be deployed. He further stated that traffic management plans and security measures will be implemented, particularly around railway stations and main bus terminals in major cities, including Colombo. The special programme will come into effect from 1 April and will continue until the end of the festive season, when people return to cities from their hometowns. “We will deploy additional traffic officers specifically for the New Year period, along with officers assigned for security duties, as in previous years. Traffic and security plans will be implemented around railway stations and main bus terminals in the Colombo area, as well as in other major cities. These measures are aimed at ensuring the safety and smooth movement of people travelling to their hometowns and those coming into cities for shopping and other needs. The Inspector General of Police has issued special instructions in this regard, and officers in charge of relevant divisions are expected to implement these plans to ensure public safety and effective traffic management. The programme is scheduled to commence from 1 April. Police officers have already been deployed, and the plan will remain in operation from 1 April until the end of the New Year period, when people have completed their travel between cities and rural areas.”
