Train services restricted between Ambepussa and Alawwa

Railway operations between Ambepussa and Alawwa will be limited to a single track from 1 April to 5 April to facilitate the permanent restoration of the Bujjomuwa Bridge, which was damaged by cyclone “Ditwah”, according to Railway Superintendent G. D. A. Samarasinghe. From 1 April to 4 April, certain trains will operate only up to Ambepussa. Due to damage caused by cyclone “Ditwah” near the Bujjomuwa railway station between Ambepussa and Alawwa, an old brick arch culvert along the railway line collapsed after being pushed towards the nearby Ma Oya. As a result, a cavity of approximately 45 feet formed beneath the track. A temporary bridge has since been installed, and train operations have been continuing with speed restrictions of 10 km/h over the bridge on both up and down lines.
