Two-month prison sentence for possessing fuel illegally

The Mount Lavinia Magistrate, Mr Pasan Amarasekara, today (19) ordered a fine of Rs. 2,500 and a mandatory two-month prison sentence for an individual who transported 65 litres of petrol in a lorry without a valid licence. The sentence was imposed on a resident of the Badovita area in Mount Lavinia. According to information received by the Wellawatte Police that a quantity of fuel had been obtained from a filling station in the Wellawatte area, the suspect was arrested last night (18) near the relevant filling station and produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court. At the time of arrest, the police discovered four cans containing petrol, valued at approximately Rs. 20,000, inside the lorry.
