UNP calls for Public Security minister to resign

2026-02-16 - 10:40

The United National Party (UNP), has condemned the twin murders of Akuregoda where Attorney-at-Law Buddhika Mallawaarachchi and his wife were gunned down in broad daylight. In a statement, the UNP warns that the murders threaten Sri Lanka’s legal system and law and order. Highlighting international parallels, the party pointed out how violence against lawyers in other countries has led to closures of law offices and targeted threats. The UNP also criticised police politicization and called for the resignation of Minister of Public Security Wijepala, the appointment of an impartial investigation team, and stronger legal protections for lawyers, reaffirming support for safeguarding the legal community.
