2026-02-11 - 02:20

The veneration of the Sacred Devnimori Relics of Lord Buddha, held at the Gangaramaya Temple, Hunupitiya, Colombo, concluded at 6.00am today (Feb. 11). According to the Chief Incumbent of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple – Ven. Dr. Kirinde Assaji Nayaka Thera, devotees were allowed to join queues to pay homage only until 10:00 pm last night. A special Indian delegation arrived earlier this week to facilitate the return of the relics to India. The Sacred Devnimori Relics of Lord Buddha, discovered during excavations in the 1960s at the historic Devnimori site in Gujarat, the birthplace of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have never before been taken outside India. However, following discussions between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Modi during the latter’s recent visit to Sri Lanka, a rare opportunity has been provided for the people of Sri Lanka to venerate these sacred relics.
