Under the facilitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and with the support of the Government of India, the public veneration of ‘Sacred Devnimori Relics of Lord Buddha’ in Sri Lanka will commence today afternoon (Feb. 04) with the first offering of flowers by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. The Sacred Devnimori Relics of Lord Buddha, discovered during excavations in the 1960s at the historic Devnimori site in Gujarat, the birthplace of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have never before been taken outside India. However, as a result of discussions held between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the latter’s recent visit to Sri Lanka, a rare opportunity has now been provided for the people of Sri Lanka to venerate the sacred relics. The Sacred Devnimori Relics of Lord Buddha, arriving in Sri Lanka via Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake, will be taken to Gangaramaya Temple in Hunupitiya, Colombo today (04) at 1.00pm, the President’s Media Division notes.
